"But there are encouraging signs because they’re just doing a grommet contest now"

But there are encouraging signs because they’re just doing a grommet contest now, which is, gromits, in surfing terms, are the little kids that kind of get in everyone’s way, little surf rats, but it’s great to see there’s about five or six kids there, and they’re all eight or nine years old, and they’re all really keen, they’re all surfing, they’re super, you know, super amped on the whole thing, and having the British Nationals here, and having the young kids being able to, kind of, interact with the British Surf stars, if you like, is really good, and they see the level that’s required to, to get to that stage. You know, they can’t kid themselves. There’s not, there’s not one of the local guys who surfs okay and they think, “that’s the level I want to get to.” Now they can look straight down at their beach and their waves and see the best guys in the UK, some of the best guys in Europe surfing, and they can see exactly where the bar lies, and they know, and I think it gets burnt into their minds, you know. They’re quite young and impressionable, and they’ll see people do turns and they’ll register and hopefully they’ll think, “right, that’s the kind of turn I have to do.”
