The Doxford Engine Friends Association

The Doxford Engine Friends Association was formed in 2001. The group works alongside Tyne & Wear Museums to maintain the 1979 J Engine housed at the Regional Museums Store at Beamish. The group also aims to preserve and promote the history of the Doxford Engine Works in Sunderland.

The Doxford Engine was designed and built in Sunderland. It was used to power large ships and was unique because of its opposed piston technology. Hundreds of people were employed in the various departments of the Doxford Works. Many began as apprentices and stayed with the company throughout their working lives.
